Mental Health Awareness Week 2025
Mental Health Awareness Week is the 12th to 18th May 2025 and this year the theme is “community”. Communities offer a sense of support, a sense of belonging and safety and also gives people a purpose in life. It is the perfect opportunity for companies to support their staff with thoughtful, inclusive, and impactful initiatives. Here are several ideas for companies to offer their employees, starting next week, but to carry on into the future too:
1. Host Mental Health Workshops and Webinars
-
Invite qualified speakers (therapists, psychologists, or lived-experience advocates) to talk about topics like anxiety, stress, burnout, or self-care.
-
Offer interactive sessions such as mindfulness, breathwork, or resilience training.
2. Promote Existing Support Services
-
Remind employees about any Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), counselling services, or mental health apps (e.g., Calm, Headspace).
-
Share resources from Mind, Samaritans, Mental Health UK, or the NHS.
3. Introduce “Wellbeing Hours” or Mental Health Days
-
Allow employees to take short breaks or half-days during the week without needing a specific reason.
-
Promote a “no-meeting” afternoon to reduce Zoom fatigue and pressure.
4. Organise Mental Health-Friendly Activities
-
Run drop-in sessions, coffee mornings, or “walk and talk” meetups (in person or virtually).
-
Host creative outlets like art therapy, journaling workshops, or group meditation.
5. Launch a Peer Support or Mental Health Champion Network
-
Train volunteers within the company to act as Mental Health First Aiders or champions.
-
Make it clear that these individuals are available to listen and support.
6. Encourage Open Conversations
-
Have senior leaders share personal messages or stories to reduce stigma.
-
Create safe spaces (e.g., roundtables or anonymous Q&A forms) where people can voice their thoughts.
7. Provide Learning for Managers
-
Run training on recognising signs of mental health struggles, having supportive conversations, and signposting help.
-
Equip managers with resources they can pass on to their teams.
8. Support Charitable Causes
-
Host a company-wide fundraiser, charity walk, or bake sale to support mental health charities like Mind, Rethink Mental Illness, or YoungMinds.
-
Match employee donations or volunteer time.
9. Create a Calmer Physical or Virtual Environment
-
Set up quiet spaces or relaxation rooms in the office.
-
Offer “digital detox” hours, encouraging employees to step away from screens.
10. Survey Staff Needs and Feedback
-
Run a short, anonymous pulse survey asking staff how they feel and what they need.
-
Use the insights to guide your mental health strategy beyond this week.
Key Tip: Focus on listening as much as delivering. Mental Health Awareness Week should be about creating space for empathy, reducing stigma, and promoting practical, ongoing support.
