Three stunning medieval wedding venues in the UK

,

Rufford Old Hall, Lancashire

This magnificent 16th-century Great Hall is surrounded by ancient gardens, and fully retains the charm and style of its 16th century origins.  Very little changes have been made to this building and its grounds over the centuries, and it’s difficult to find a more genuine article than this treasured National Trust venue.  William Shakespeare himself once graced this majestic hall, and the woodlands and historic outbuildings offer a truly magical setting for both a ceremony and a reception.

The Tudor Great Hall is only licensed to hold civil ceremonies and partnerships on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings, but be warned, the public will descend upon this venue come around 11.30am – so while it’s a fantastic venue for a ceremony before going on to a separate party destination, those looking for exclusive hire for entire days and evenings will have to settle for a weekday wedding.  This does have its advantages, though, as you can hire this beautiful venue for the relatively modest sum of just over £1000.  Drinks and catering packages are also available for 70 seated in the Tudor Hall, or up to 250 guests in the marquee on the lawn.

Queen’s College Cambridge

The Old Hall here at Queen’s College is ideal for wedding receptions, and offers a sophisticated, elegant setting for your big day.  This intricately decorated space accommodates up to 114 seated or 150 standing, while musicians can reside in the minstrel gallery for an extra-authentic touch.  Cakes look particularly spectacular when displayed on the grand piano, and you have the option to access the outdoors directly for al fresco drinks receptions.

The fireplace, carved wood paneling, tiled floor and stained glass windows give this space an immediate sense of occasion and grandeur, but equally, also create a warm and comfortable atmosphere.

Cleeve Abbey, Somerset

The Cistercian Abbey of Cleeve is said to contain the finest cloister buildings in England, and much has remained the same at this magical venue for the last 800 years.

The grounds feature a charming stream running through lawns, woodland and carpets of flowers, making for a magical setting to explore with your wedding photographer.  The venue itself also offers exceptional opportunities for unique and artistic shots, and inside, the simple addition of flowers and candles transform this already theatrical space into something so romantic and heartfelt, that you and your maximum of 100 guests are certain to remember it for many, many years.

The other fantastic (and practical) thing about Cleeve Abbey is that Washford Station is just a 10 minute, flat and very simple walk away – ideal for those in your party who are travelling by public transport!
