A Wedding Afloat The Thames
Sailing enthusiasts ahoy! If you and your partner have a special connection with the water, or perhaps just wish to hold your wedding in a unique and memorable venue, then The HQS Wellington could be just the place for you.
The ship is moored just a stone’s throw from Temple Underground Station, comfortably sitting on the divide between The City and Westminster. Naturally, this makes for fantastic unobstructed views of some of London’s most famous landmarks, and is a photographer’s dream. 250 people can be comfortably received for a standing reception, and there is a beautifully finished open-air deck for those all-important drinks, finger food, and for generally taking in the sights of the city.
An impressive collection of maritime antiques and treasures also reside here, and are a noticeable sparkling feature in almost every coer. Being surrounded by historical documents, paintings, intricate model ships, trophies and other more humble but equally significant artefacts, give this venue a real sense of style, value and expense. The décor leans itself to that of a country mansion, but you will of course be reminded at every tu of the original marine-orientated purpose of this beautiful ship. If you’re going maritime mad and really want to ‘push the boat out’ (apologies, couldn’t resist) then you can organise for fun educational tours around the boat, which is after all officially part museum – due to it’s significant collection of important objects and documents.
Overall, this is a very flexible space in which to customise your party – you could hire the whole ship, and provide yourself with a huge amount of open space. The venue holds a civil ceremony license, and you will certainly look the part descending upon the Court Room down the handsome oak staircase to greet your guests as Mr. & Mrs. for the first time! You can then enjoy a delicious sit down meal, surrounded by artwork and ancient maps and charts.
If you’re looking to have an intimate wedding with lesser numbers, you can hire any of the rooms you like on the boat as opposed to the entire space. The appropriately named Model Room holds just 40 people in opulent surroundings, and offers fantastic views over Westminster.
